About The Artist

15811.jpg

Joey Toogood (b. 2001, Kent) is a multidisciplinary artist and photographer based in New Malden, London, graduating with a BA in Fine Art from the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham, in 2022. Toogood joined Wimbledon Art Studios in September 2024.

Toogood takes inspiration from political, personal and social issues, using a combination of processes, mediums and materials art to document her lived expereinces as a queer woman artist.

Her conceptual ideas serve as a channel for expressing emotions, drawing from personal stories, politics and feminism.

The artist enjoys being both subject and director within her photographic projetcs; using both film and digital , Toogood captures human and intimate encounters.

Through oil painting, Toogood finds an escape from current political, social and econmic challenges. The artist can find the present overwhelming; producing works that respond to reality creates a conflicting environment of comfort and stress. At times, Toogood finds conceptual works very taxing to her mental and emotional wellbeing; painting allows her to focus on beauty.

"I am deeply interested in the three archetypes of the woman: The Sexual Object, The Mother, and The Unknown (or No Man’s Land). Every woman is likely to experience one or more of these roles throughout her life. My work explores these outcomes, examining the influence of sexuality and sensuality in my personal experiences, the complexities of motherhood and childbirth, and the evolving possibilities of being a queer modern woman, where one's survival is not dependent on the presence of a man."
